Empower your unmedicated birth experience with a doula’s support.
When you envision your birth, it’s not just about the moment your baby arrives — it’s about how you feel in the process. Birth is a beautiful and transformative experience, and finding ways to navigate it with strength, confidence, and peace is key.
For many women, choosing natural pain relief during labor is an empowering decision. It allows you to stay connected to your body, trust in its wisdom, and create a calm, controlled environment — even in the most intense moments.
In this post, I’ll share a comprehensive guide to the most effective natural pain relief birth techniques, including breathing exercises, water birth, acupressure, and massage. These methods will support you in achieving an empowered birth experience, helping you feel grounded and in control.
Breathing Techniques: Connecting to Your Body’s Rhythm
Breathing is a powerful tool for managing pain during labor. It’s one of the most natural, intuitive ways to bring calm to your body and mind. Deep, rhythmic breathing helps your body stay oxygenated, relaxed, and focused — making it easier to ride through contractions with a sense of calm and presence.
An example for a really effective breathing (&sounding) technique is The “Ha” breath:
During a contraction, breathe in deeply and then exhale with a long “ha” sound. This helps release tension and keeps your body from tensing up.
Breathing is a simple yet deeply effective natural pain relief technique that you can practice long before labor begins. The more connected you are to your breath, the easier it will be to manage the sensations of labor when the time comes.
Water Birth: Soothing the Senses
There’s a reason so many women choose water birth as part of their natural pain relief birth plan. Water has a calming, soothing effect that can ease both physical and emotional tension (this has also been shown by scientific studies!)
Relieve pressure and tension on the body, especially in the pelvis and lower back.
Enhance relaxation and promote a peaceful, calming environment.
Support movement and flexibility, allowing you to find positions that feel best for you.
Whether you’re birthing at home or in a hospital, many places now offer birth pools or tubs to help you manage labor pain naturally. Always request to have a birth pool when you register with your birth place, so they can keep it free for you.
Acupressure: A Touch of Relief
Acupressure is another highly effective method for pain relief during labor. It works by stimulating specific pressure points in the body to release tension and promote relaxation.
This is a very comprehensive video explaining three acupressure points that can relieve pain (and also induce labor, so please don't practice it on a pregnant woman!)
Massage is an incredibly effective and intuitive method for managing natural pain relief during labor. Whether it's your partner, doula, or a midwife providing the massage, touch can help ease discomfort, reduce tension, and promote feelings of connection and support.
Some techniques include:
Lower back massage: Gently massaging the lower back during contractions can help alleviate pressure, especially if you’re feeling intense back pain.
Birthing ball massage: Sitting on a birthing ball while receiving a gentle back rub or shoulder massage can help open the pelvis and ease tight muscles.
Massage helps keep you present in the moment and connected to your body, fostering a sense of relaxation and grounding throughout labor.
Moving during labor is one of the most intuitive ways to manage pain and enhance comfort.
Movement helps to:
Open the pelvis and encourage baby to descend
Relieve tension, especially in the lower back and hips
Improve circulation, which can ease pain and fatigue
Your body knows how to move to ease discomfort — trust it! Intuitive Movement is key here.
TENS Machine: A Portable Pain-Relief Solution
A TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a small, portable device that uses low-voltage electrical pulses to help relieve pain during labor. It’s easy to use and can be a wonderful addition to your natural pain relief toolkit.
The TENS machine works by stimulating nerves, blocking pain signals from reaching the brain, and releasing endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers). It can be especially helpful for women experiencing back labor or those who want an additional pain relief method to complement breathing, water, or massage.
Some women love it, some don't, so see what works for you :)
Aromatherapy: Scent to Soothe
Aromatherapy can be an incredibly effective natural pain relief tool. Essential oils have calming, relaxing effects that can help manage stress and ease labor discomfort.
I feel the best way to use it is to apply it to a towel or napkin, not on the laboring woman's body, so she can smell it when it feels good and also get rid of it once she does not want to smell it anymore.
Different oils have different uses (ask staff in store or learn from someone who is an expert, to know which oils are suitable for which purpose and which ones are also not recommended in pregnancy).
But they also are a great way of guiding your senses to something pleasurable and away from tense or painful sensations.
The power of scent can guide you through labor, providing a calm and nurturing environment when you need it most.
